Community Safety

West Arnhem Regional Council’s Community Safety team are responsible for a variety of safety initiatives in Gunbalanya, Minjilang and Warruwi. These community services involve prevention, early intervention and crisis mediation. In Gunbalanya, our services extend to the Gunbalanya Women’s Safe House (GWSH) and Night Patrol. The Minjilang and Warruwi Community Safety teams also provide Night Patrol services.

The Community Safety team employs local staff and embraces vital cultural outlooks in every aspect of service delivery.

Women’s Safe House

The Gunbalanya Women’s Safe House offers support services which include:

  • Assistance to clients who are experiencing family and/or domestic violence
  • Community stakeholder liaison with community leaders, police, school and clinic
  • Receive and action referrals from police, Clinic and Night Patrol
  • Initiates well-being activities for clients and families
  • Works closely with external stakeholders to deliver educational programs to clients and families

Night Patrol

The Night Patrol teams in communities provide:

  • Support to vulnerable people and ensuring their safety
  • Mediation of community unrest
  • Support to children to prepare to attend school every day
  • Support to community safety initiatives
  • Connecting and maintaining important relationships with community leaders and stakeholders to enhance the community’s safety
  • Mentoring and supporting at-risk young people
